Soprano Suzanne Houlden was known as Suzanne Cullen when she joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company chorus in January 1979. She had previously studied at the Conservatorium of Music in her native Melbourne and appeared in numerous productions for the Victorian Gilbert & Sullivan Society.

During her three years with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, which ended when the Company disbanded forever in February 1982, Miss Houlden filled in on occasion as Edith in The Pirates of Penzance (1979-80), Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore (1980-81), and Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard (1981-82).
